Raghavendra ‘Shan’ Shanbhag, Creative Director, WATG Singapore, is an architect whose journey spans continents and cultures, from the vibrant streets of Bangalore, India, to the bustling metropolis of Singapore. Shan has established himself as a prominent figure in hospitality design across Southeast Asia and the Middle East, showcasing the power of curiosity, resilience, and the art of storytelling in architecture.

As well as his professional accomplishments, Shan is known for his humor and transparency. He enjoys telling stories and connecting with people, embodying a spirit of optimism and humility. These qualities, instilled by his parents, have shaped his approach to life and architecture.

Early Life and Education

Shan’s architectural journey began in Bangalore, where he was born and raised. His early fascination with different cultures and places was fueled by books and stories, long before the age of the internet. His childhood in Bangalore was marked by curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. He frequented libraries, explored theatre, and played cricket. These experiences nurtured both his practical and artistic inclinations. His father, a pioneer in his own right, inspired Shan to break boundaries and explore beyond the familiar, instilling in him a spirit of adventure and resilience.

Seeking a climate similar to India’s and a top-notch education, Shan moved to Florida to pursue his master’s in architecture. This transition, while challenging, was an adventure that Shan embraced wholeheartedly, driven by his passion for travel and cultural exploration.

Journey into Architecture

From a young age, Shan was captivated by the power of stories and the arts. He dabbled in acting, stand-up comedy, and storytelling, all of which nurtured his expressive and creative talents. These interests led him to architecture, a field that combines practical problem-solving with emotional expression. For Shan, architecture is about weaving narratives into the fabric of our environments, creating spaces that tell unique and compelling stories.

Shan’s brief stint in Hindi stand-up comedy and theatre equipped him with courage and the ability to connect with audiences—skills that are invaluable in architecture. Designing spaces is about eliciting emotions, and connecting the past, present, and future of buildings so they resonate deeply with their surroundings and the people who inhabit them.

Shan views architecture as a dynamic symphony, an ever-evolving narrative.

Design Philosophy

Sustainability is a cornerstone of Shan’s work. He designs buildings that are not only visually appealing but also enduring. Inspired by Leon Krier’s concept of a “sense of place,” he emphasizes the importance of creating memorable experiences in hospitality design. Guests take home memories, and it’s the responsibility of architects to ensure these memories are positive and lasting.

In his Masters thesis, “Space-Time Continuum: A Design Approach for the Built Environment,” Shan described design as “frozen music.” Today, he views architecture as a dynamic symphony, an ever-evolving narrative. His work reflects a balance between capturing a moment in time and creating spaces that remain timeless and relevant for future generations.

Influences and Inspirations

Travel has always been a significant goal for Shan. Growing up without the internet, the world seemed vast and distant. His desire to explore different places and cultures has driven his career, allowing him to design projects across the globe. This curiosity and love for adventure have been instrumental in shaping his architectural journey.

From cricket legend Kapil Dev to the fictional Howard Roark from “The Fountainhead,” Shan’s inspirations are diverse, instilling in him the values of resilience, creativity, and ambition, shaping his approach to architecture and life.

Professional Journey

In hospitality design, understanding the intent and extent of a project is crucial. Shan emphasizes the importance of knowing why a project exists and its financial and creative boundaries. Through conversations with clients and on-site visits, he refines these insights to ensure his designs are innovative, practical, and financially viable.

Two projects particularly stand out in Shan’s career. The Crowne Plaza Sanya Haitang Bay, a unique structure that defied traditional norms, and a high-end resort in the Philippines. The latter involved reviving a region devastated by a volcanic eruption, integrating local artistry, and restoring the natural environment.

His designs reflect the essence of their locations, incorporating local food, patterns, and lifestyles. This approach ensures that each project tells a compelling story, creating memorable experiences for those who visit.
