Emirates Palace

Emirates Palace, an architectural marvel situated in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, is a palatial oasis of luxury that seamlessly blends cultural sensitivity, modern design techniques, and a deep connection with the national identity of the UAE.  

As the lead consultant and design manager, WATG played a pivotal role in transforming the vision of Emirates Palace into a stunning reality. The project encompassed three distinct elements: individual palaces for each Gulf Council head of state, a state-of-the-art conference venue with superior banqueting facilities, and a luxurious 400-key Kempinski hotel. The construction, overseen by an alliance between WATG and KEO Integrated Engineering Consultants, was completed in 2004, marking the rise of a cultural and heritage architectural masterpiece in Abu Dhabi. 

Jeremy Heyes, representing WATG, recollects the significance of the project, stating, “Abu Dhabi had been chosen to host the next GCC summit…There was a massive ambition to get it done as quickly as possible. With a team of 80 design professionals, including architects, interior designers, and engineers, working on-site, WATG diligently ensured that every detail of the design was meticulously executed.” 

Emirates Palace enchants visitors from the moment they catch sight of it. Water features, palm trees, and an awe-inspiring exterior design allude to a palatial oasis that pays homage to Abu Dhabi’s cultural heritage while maintaining a strong connection with the UAE’s national identity. WATG’s design effectively frames the sloping approach to the building, featuring a magnificent combination of marble, granite, and stone. The building’s illuminated balconies create a captivating light show, adding to the overall allure. 

Jeremy Heyes emphasizes the intended impact of the arrival sequence, stating, “The drive up to the entrance slowly takes people through gardens, past water fountains and under arches… It is clearly meant to be inspiring. The hotel’s elevated position allows it to be visible from kilometers away, heightening guests’ expectations as they progress towards the main entrance.” 

Stepping into Emirates Palace reveals an interior that exudes elegance and serenity. Natural stone, antique gold, and mother-of-pearl elements blend harmoniously, creating an atmosphere of refined luxury. The expansive central dome, adorned with intricate geometrical patterns, is accompanied by 114 smaller domes that are spread across the building. Notably, WATG’s design incorporated modern techniques of etching and casting, enabling traditional patterns to become an integral part of the facade. 

Emirates Palace’s unique location, situated on a beachfront, presents a fascinating contrast between the concept of a palace and a traditional resort. While beaches are typically associated with casual leisure activities, a palace is symbolic of significant royal events. Jeremy remarks, “It was an extraordinary choice of site and pretty visionary.” 

With 7,000 doors, 128 kitchens, and 1,002 crystal chandeliers, Emirates Palace offers unparalleled luxury. Its opulent interior is adorned with 26,247 meters of 22-carat gold leaf, masterfully applied by an in-house gold leaf specialist. The verdant gardens surrounding the property are home to 8,000 trees and attract more than 150 species of birds.
