Designed to capture the spirit of the region, this project was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1981, a key moment in WATG’s history. Spanning across 76 acres, the resort features 100 cottage rooms and exemplifies the seamless integration of contemporary design principles with indigenous materials and architectural forms.

Design Concept and Inspiration

The design concept was born out of a vision to create a project that harmonized with the surrounding environment and reflected the cultural heritage of the East Coast of Malaysia. Inspired by the 17th-century Malay palaces, the resort’s buildings incorporate pitched roofs, decorative elements, verandahs, and high ceilings for optimal ventilation. The traditional design features were meticulously crafted using local materials such as timber, bamboo, and stone, blending harmoniously with contemporary design sensibilities.

Preserving Traditional Craftsmanship

One of the primary objectives of the project was to honor the essence of traditional architectural heritage. The design team was committed to using local craftsmen and materials, thus supporting the preservation of traditional skills and engaging the local community. By providing economic opportunities and serving as a creative outlet for local resources, crafts, and culture, Tanjong Jara Resort established a mutually reinforcing relationship with the community, fostering economic growth and preserving the region’s cultural identity.

Conservation and Environmental Sustainability

Tanjong Jara Resort also played a crucial role in promoting the conservation and preservation of marine life in the area. By encouraging respect for the environment and implementing sustainable practices, the resort set an example for responsible tourism. The design took advantage of natural ventilation, reducing the reliance on air conditioning and providing a comfortable interior temperature even in the hottest weather.

Architectural Character and Site Planning

Reflecting the diverse architectural character of the region, Tanjong Jara Resort seamlessly integrated elements from various cultural influences. From the Moorish minarets and domes of mosques to the distinctive roof forms of Terengganu, the resort celebrated the rich architectural vocabulary of Malaysia. The site plan, inspired by the casual rambling form of local fishing villages, maximized the physical and visual advantages of the crescent-shaped site. The placement of units, including duplex cottages inspired by traditional Malay Istana design, ensured that every guest room and public area benefited from the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Traditional Construction Techniques

The resort’s structures were built using traditional ethnic-style post and beam construction. The timber trusses carry the roofs, which are covered with local clay tiles placed on hardwood battens and rafters. This approach not only maintains the visual expression of the local architecture but also allows for excellent natural ventilation. The windows feature timber carvings and decorative motifs on the fan lights. The resort’s aesthetic is further enhanced by timber fascia carved to emulate the traditional palace look, preserving the cultural heritage of the region.

Tanjong Jara Resort proved to be not only an economic success but also a significant catalyst for the surrounding village’s development.
