WATG Veterans – Advice to NextGen Designers

January 20, 2025
In the dynamic world of architecture and design, the journey to success is often shaped by teamwork, curiosity, and a passion for growth. At WATG and Wimberly Interiors, a legacy of collaboration and innovation spans decades, creating an environment where individuals can thrive.
During a recent discussion in celebration of our 80th anniversary this year, four WATG veterans—Ron Holecek, Mike Chun, Ron Van Pelt, and Tom Fo—shared insights on what it takes to excel in this ever-evolving industry.
The Importance of Teamwork and Communication
Ron Holecek emphasized the critical role of collaboration in architecture and design. “It’s important for new talent to understand the significance of working with and communicating effectively with those around them,” he said. Architecture is not a solitary pursuit; it thrives on teamwork. “Being a part of a team and communicating as a team member is extremely important to our profession,” Holecek added. The collective success of an organization depends on how well its individuals work together, making communication a cornerstone of personal and professional growth.
Savoring the Journey
Finally, Mike Chun offered a holistic perspective, urging newcomers to “enjoy the experience.” He noted that WATG’s versatility provides a rare opportunity to explore various facets of architecture—from design and management to technical expertise. “When you come to WATG, you can experience what each of these avenues offers and grow to the best of your ability,” Chun explained. The firm’s rich history and diverse opportunities make it a unique environment for both personal and professional development.
Building Relationships and Patience
Ron Van Pelt highlighted the value of interpersonal connections within the workplace. “I like to walk around, talk to people, and see what’s happening—not just in their work but also in their lives,” he shared. This camaraderie fosters a sense of unity and pride in collective accomplishments.
Van Pelt also stressed patience and the importance of learning from others. “Be patient. Learn to learn from others,” he advised. Opportunities abound in the field of architecture, but seizing them requires time, observation, and persistence. “It’s like bingo; wherever you look, there’s a chance. Go for it.”
Embracing Curiosity and Passion
For Tom Fo, the journey of learning never stops. “Every day, there’s something new to learn,” he said, encouraging young professionals not to fear asking questions or making mistakes. “Don’t be afraid to ask. Don’t be afraid to be. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.” Each experience is a building block, contributing to an expansive knowledge base over time.
Fo underscored the importance of passion as a guiding principle. “Find out what you’re passionate about,” he said. Whether it’s design, technical drawings, or project management, identifying and pursuing your interests can lead to a fulfilling career. He believes the best architects are those who can balance creativity and technical expertise, bridging the gap between ideation and execution.
